Today in
History 1621 - The first duel in the New World of
America reportedly took place in Massachusetts' Plymouth Colony. 1778 - American forces entered Philadelphia as
the British withdrew during the Revolutionary War. 1812 - The United States issued a declaration of
war on Great Britain beginning the War of 1812. The war was declared because
of Britain’s violations of America’s rights on the high seas and the
involvement of the British in Indian uprisings on the American frontiers. 1815 - Former French emperor Napoleon was
defeated in the Battle of Waterloo, Belgium. Napoleon had faced two armies:
one army led by the Duke of Wellington, who commanded a combined force of
Belgian, Dutch, and British troops, and the other army led by Marshal
Blucher, who commanded a Prussian force. Almost 50,000 men were killed or
severely injured. The Battle of Waterloo lasted only one day. Born On

admission of the crime had been made by the
accused when they were all in jail under detention. I was of course shocked by the
revelation. My quest for justice had
resulted in an injustice and I had been an unwitting participant. But why is
this little story being recalled. It
is recalled to show that Philippine justice system is flawed with so many
deficiencies. Many people who are
really guilty sometimes go unpunished and go scot-free and many innocent
persons do get convicted in Courts.
You can bet your life that not all death convicts inhabiting death row
are guilty of the crimes they have been convicted. Which makes one seriously think of joining
the ranks of advocates for the abolition of Capital Punishment in the
Philippines.
By way of footnote, the said guilty farmer whom I defended got his
comeuppance several years after he was acquitted. While walking home, he was
shot to death by unknown persons who up to the present are unapprehended. |
