Literacy is fundamental to human development.  It is the single most important factor for human economic upliftment and better quality of life. It even helps in meeting our basic needs like food, shelter and clothing.
Literacy breaks the cycle of ignorance, poverty, hunger and diseases that has plagued our society for generations. It is said to be directly proportional to human progress. People who are illiterate often fall victims to abuse, unable to qualify for a decent job thus, pushing them towards negative forces of society such as drug abuse, homelessness and criminality.
As we celebrate Literacy Month this July, we have started identifying areas that need immediate attention that might, in a way, contribute to the improvement of our system of education. To my mind there is no better place to start to focus concern than our public elementary schools. Our club has started some courtesy visit to all the 24 school districts of La Union

for possible linkages. We have lined up projects such like training on effective teaching technique for classroom teachers to elevate their teaching skills, training on setting up SPED center for school principals and supervisors. There will also be numerous seminars on dissemination of information regarding prevention and control of dengue fever, one of our foremost health problems especially during rainy season. The usual year-round book donations to various schools, and the career guidance and development will continue as usual. Our club will also sponsor essay writing and elocution contests during certain important national occasions so as to create better awareness.
I therefore encourage my fellow Rotarians to be involved and support these projects. The very key to its success lies on each and every one of us giving a small share of their precious time.
